CHAPTER FIFTEEN

I hadn’t been sleeping well for the past week, and it was starting to wear on me in a way that wasn’t cute. I had often woken up to a bad hair day, but as I stared in the mirror and poked at my cheeks, I wondered if it was possible to have a bad face day. It just didn’t look quite right. I couldn’t figure out if it was puffy or hollowed out or maybe both, but I didn’t like it.

My attitude was also a bit off. I tripped over the strap of my bag, and my first response was to swing around and kick my purse into the door of the cabin like a soccer player going for a goal. I cursed then stomped around, trying to find my favorite light, layer-able sweater.

But the part that bothered me the most was that I wasn’t sure why I was in such a foul mood.

My phone rang, and seeing the name of Esmerelda’s store on the screen, I burst into a smile.

“What’s up?”

Esmerelda replied. “I’m so sorry to bother you, but something came up about the case. If you have plans this morning, then—”

“I don’t. I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

I grabbed what I needed from around the room and flung myself out the door.

I skipped past my car, deciding instead to enjoy the walk over to the store. I loved being able to walk, to avoid the bane of my existence: finding parking.

Mom was doing more shopping, but I had begged off, explaining that I needed to pack, though she had still wrangled me into a hair appointment later in the day. I still felt guilty, but we had spent more one-on-one time together the previous day than we normally did in a month of living together. Frankly, my gut said she found me as exhausting as I found her.

I had made it halfway to the store, when suddenly I saw a shape next to me.

Chuy had fallen into step with me, and instinctively, I looked around for danger. Though she sometimes seemed to show up just to hang out, I had noticed that her appearance often correlated with increased danger for me. I wasn’t going to be caught unaware again.

I checked my danger ring for any glow that indicated someone meant me harm, but it just sat there. When we got to the corner, I took a chance to try my new gazing ball ring, imagining myself crossing the road, then checked to see if I had any response.

Chuy pressed to my side, panting and looking both ways down and up the road. I thought I saw pink in the stone of the ring and pulled it closer to my face, but whatever I saw disappeared.

We crossed the street, and I paused on the corner. The church with the large stained-glass window was in front of me, the repairs to the windows completed. I usually crossed over to Second a few blocks earlier, but for whatever reason, I had not done so.
